This Custom Concrete and Wood Table was a collaboration between Béton Studio and our friend Rob at o8o Studio in Tampa, FL.
Rob’s clients came to him with a large slab of wood that they had imported. It came with a wonderful story about the man who made the slab and how, instead of a forklift, he had a pet elephant who would help him move these massive logs around. They ended up buying a piece of wood from him and shipping it back home to create a unique dining table.
The clients, one an immensely talented artist, wasn’t entirely sure how to go about it. Rob called us up to see if we would be interested in joining the wood with concrete, while he fashioned the aluminum base to support the whole thing.
I was honored to be part of the program. We made a few concrete color samples to test against the wood and it was finally decided that a charcoal color would be used. We prepped the wood by planing it flat. We drilled holes into the side of the slab to hold in some threaded rod ‘dowels.’ After the concrete had cured, the dowels were firmly set in the concrete half of the table.
We processed both the wood and the concrete by sanding, filling in any pinholes in the concrete, and sealing both pieces before glueing them together with a flexible marine grade epoxy. The result is a sturdy connection that allows the concrete and the wood to expand and contract at their own rates without the risk of cracking either half.
